Brief River Description

A couple of grade 5 cascades, a shorter one of grade 4 and some grade 3 in between.

Directions to the Put-in

On the way into the Black Valley. From Kenmare or Killarney take the N71 to Moll's Gap, then the R568 towards Sneem and after 1km a minor road on right towards the Black Valley. About 5km from here to cascades. The road runs beside the river. Best parking (limited) at end of run.

Directions to the Take-out

Road and river beside each other. When river and road separate and you see a small gravel layby on right, this is the take out.

River Description

It has four main rapids. First grade 4 short series of drops. Then single slide with hole at bottom, small pool and then the main event - a huge cascade that will get even the most jaded river-runner's heart pounding! then some grade 3 stuff, followed by the final cascade (some pin potential here). take out at bottom of slide.

Local issues

No issues known. However its a narrow road with limited parking and a popular tourist area so change discreetly!

River level gauge

No gauge- just stand at the top and pray

River Hazards

Major injury potential if you get it wrong in low or medium water. Major death potential in HW. Also trees and fences at river level. Having said that its also FUN!!!
